  • smart people

I've been lucky enough in most of my jobs to have been surrounded by super smart people.  It's a little bit of a struggle always being the team dummy, but it's great always being able to learn.  And, I think my current team is diverse enough that everyone has their own expertise, so I do know more about some parts than other people.

My current project is pretty interesting.  It's a nifty feature for animators so that they can see the path of their animation.  For example, if you have a hand moving through space, there will be a path that the hand will follow.  It actually looks a little rave-ish because, on opposite sides of the path of animation, it fades off.  So, when you move the hand through space, it's brighter at the current time frame, kind of like moving a glow stick around.

Anyway.  Don't think you'll find that interesting.  I just need to take a break.

  • What exactly is the healtcare debate?

As far as I can tell, the side that you're on depends on if you:
    a) support death panels
    or
    b) support killing poor Americans.

I haven't been able to choose my side on this one yet...

The current thing on facebook is if you think people should die if they can't afford to pay for healthcare.  I guess this implies that, under the current system, if you can't pay for insurance under a life-threatening illness, we let you die.  Which has a fair amount of truth to it.  But, the funny thing is, that's still the case with the new proposal!!  If you can't pay your premiums for the public option, we still let you die!!

I think people are confusing this with Medicare, where it seems like you don't have premiums.  The reality of this is that, if you've been working for 40 years, the taxes that you've been paying *are* your premiums.  It's not that you magically get free insurance when you retire.  You've been paying it all along.

  • rotten tomatoes

Our new movie is coming out in a few weeks.  100% so far, with 19 Fresh reviews on rotten tomatoes.  It gets exciting when it actually gets to the theaters.  I haven't seen it in 3D yet, so I'll be watching it after it comes out.  As it gets closer to release and after it's released, it usually gets a few bad reviews.

    FYI, historically,
    WALL-E: 96% (211/220)
    Ratatouille: 96% (192/205)
Cars: 75% (139/185) (Yeah, I didn't think it was that great either)
    Incredibles: 97% (214/221)

There are usually people that like to give negative reviews because they stand out, and then they get hits to their website/newspaper.

  • health insurance

Obama's grand plan is to have universal health insurance.  Now, I haven't read what that entails, but, from what I gather, it means that everyone will have insurance.  Kind of like our legal system - if you can't afford an attorney/health insurance, one will be provided for you, provided by the taxpayer.

Now, I just got my bill back from my little jaunt to the emergency room a few months ago.  $905.66.  After insurance, my bill comes to $277.47.  Now, this was just for some guy to stick a needle and thread through my finger a few times.  The 'laceration tray', which was just some gauze, was $301.00.

So, I suppose Obama's reasoning is, "How can someone without insurance pay $905.66 for some simple stitches.  We must provide it for them."  My reaction is, "Why should the taxpayers be paying a hospital $301.00 for some gauze?!?"  If we took away health insurance, I bet no one would be paying these outlandish prices, and some doctors would probably form a medical group that charges, say, $100 for a few pieces of gauze.  I'd go there, wouldn't you?

But, instead, we're going to continue to let hospitals charge insane prices, and insurance companies will be paying them.  Except, now, the government will also be paying the hospitals.  And, the government has deepest pockets of them all (since they just get their money from us), so I bet hospitals will charge even more.  I only think this because of friends from other countries that have socialized medicine complain of high taxes because they have to pay for the added tax of healthcare.

  • oops

Well, I didn't post any pictures from our party, but I posted them on flickr, but turned them to private.  And, apparently, so did a whole lot of other people.  Some of the blogs that follow our company posted links to flickr with the search "Pixar Up Wrap Party".  (Seems like my coworkers are doing the same, since there are lot fewer results now.)  I suppose seeing pictures of drunken animators does not help box office revenues.

One of the public ones:  I'm all the way over on the left.  Don't I look nice?
Edit: I guess the image has been taken down or protected.

Of course, this is before the festivities began.
